What is CO₂?

Max Anders, CEO

When we talk about climate change, sustainability, or reforestation, we often hear the word CO₂. But what does it really mean?
CO₂, or carbon dioxide, is a gas that occurs naturally on the planet. It can't be seen or smelled, but it's present in the air around us. Although it's often associated with pollution, CO₂ isn't inherently bad. In fact, it's essential for life.
People and animals produce CO₂ when we breathe. It's also generated when fuels like gasoline, diesel, gas, coal, or wood are burned. For example, a car releases CO₂ when it uses fuel to move, and a factory can emit CO₂ when using energy or machinery.

Natural CO₂ and CO₂ generated by people

CO₂ has always existed on Earth. Nature also has ways of absorbing it, such as trees, plants, oceans, and soils. Thanks to this balance, the planet has maintained conditions suitable for life.

The problem is that today, human activities generate more CO₂ than nature can easily absorb. This occurs mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels, industry, transportation, and deforestation.
When we emit more CO₂ than nature can capture, the balance is disrupted.

What is the relationship between CO₂ and climate change?

CO₂ is one of the gases that helps trap heat in the atmosphere. This process is called the greenhouse effect, and in normal amounts, it is necessary to maintain the Earth at a suitable temperature.

The problem arises when there is too much CO₂. As it accumulates in the atmosphere, it traps more heat than necessary, and the planet's temperature gradually rises. This contributes to climate change.
Climate change can lead to higher temperatures, irregular rainfall, droughts, stronger storms, loss of biodiversity, and damage to ecosystems.

How do trees capture CO₂?

Trees capture CO₂ through a natural process called photosynthesis.

Through their leaves, they absorb CO₂ from the air and, with the help of sunlight and water, convert it into energy for growth. Some of this carbon is stored in the trunk, branches, roots, and soil.

Simply put, trees take CO₂ from the air and transform it into life: leaves, wood, roots, fruit, shade, and food for many species.

In addition, trees help protect the soil, conserve water, improve air quality, reduce heat, and provide habitats for birds, insects, and other animals.

Why is planting trees important?

Planting trees is a simple, positive action with real impact. Each tree can help capture CO₂ during its lifetime and also contributes to restoring ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, and improving the environment where we live.

For companies, reforestation is a clear way to strengthen their sustainability and environmental responsibility efforts. However, planting trees must be done responsibly, choosing appropriate species, the right locations, and monitoring them to ensure their growth.

We can all be part of the solution

CO₂ is essential for life, but excess CO₂ poses a significant challenge to the planet.

The good news is that we can all help. We can reduce our consumption, use energy more efficiently, support sustainable projects, and plant trees.
At Planta Mi Árbol (Plant My Tree), we work to make reforestation accessible to individuals and businesses. Every tree planted represents a real action to capture CO₂, restore ecosystems, and build a more sustainable future.
Plant trees with Planta Mi Árbol and be part of a positive solution to climate change. Every action counts, and every tree makes a difference.
