How to calculate CO₂?

When we talk about sustainability, we often hear about the importance of measuring CO₂ emissions. But how is it actually calculated?
Calculating CO₂ means estimating how much carbon dioxide a person, company, event, or activity generates. This helps us understand our environmental impact and make better decisions to reduce or offset it.

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is the amount of emissions we generate through our daily activities.

For example, we generate emissions when we use a car, take a flight, consume electricity, transport goods, or produce waste.

Although we usually talk about CO₂, there are other gases that affect the climate. Therefore, the term CO₂ equivalent is often used, which allows us to measure all these gases in a single unit.

How is CO₂ calculated?

The simplest way to calculate CO₂ is using this formula:
CO₂ emissions = Consumption or activity × Emission factor
Consumption or activity can be, for example, the number of liters of gasoline used, kilometers traveled, kilowatts of electricity consumed, or flights taken.
The emission factor is a value that indicates how much CO₂ is generated per unit of that activity.

Simple example

If a car consumes 40 liters of gasoline in a month, we can estimate its emissions by multiplying those liters by the gasoline emission factor.
Approximately, each liter of gasoline generates about 2.3 kg of CO₂.

Therefore:
40 liters × 2.3 kg of CO₂ = 92 kg of CO₂
This means that the car generated approximately 92 kg of CO₂ that month.
This same principle can be applied to other activities, such as electricity consumption, flights, freight transport, or the use of machinery.

How can a company calculate it?

A company can calculate its CO₂ emissions by reviewing its main sources of emissions, for example:

  • Electricity consumed.
  • Fuel used by vehicles.
  • Business travel.
  • Product transportation.
  • Waste generated.
  • Corporate events.

First, consumption data is collected. Then, the corresponding emission factors are applied. Finally, all emissions are added together to determine the approximate total impact.
This calculation helps identify where the most emissions are generated and what actions can be taken to reduce them.

Why is it important to calculate CO₂?

Calculating CO₂ is important because what gets measured gets improved.
When we know our carbon footprint, we can make more responsible choices. For example, we can use energy more efficiently, reduce unnecessary travel, improve transportation routes, use more efficient vehicles, or decrease waste.
It also allows us to offset some of the emissions that cannot be avoided.

How does reforestation help?

Trees naturally capture CO₂ through photosynthesis. They absorb carbon dioxide from the air and store carbon in their trunks, branches, roots, and soil.
Therefore, planting trees is a positive action that helps capture CO₂, restore ecosystems, and protect biodiversity.

However, the ideal approach is to combine two actions: first, reduce emissions, and then offset those emissions that cannot be avoided.

Calculate, reduce, and compensate

Sustainability can begin with three simple steps:
Calculate your environmental impact.
Reduce the emissions you can avoid.
Offset the remaining emissions by supporting reforestation projects.
At Planta Mi Árbol (Plant My Tree), we help individuals and companies turn their environmental commitment into real, simple, and positive actions.
Calculate your impact, reduce what you prune, and offset it by planting trees with Planta Mi Árbol. Every tree is a concrete action to help the planet.
